What is Ayurveda?
The ancient science of life
Ayurveda is India's traditional system of natural healing, practiced for more than 5,000 years. It teaches that health is a state of balance between body, mind and spirit, and that each of us has a unique path back to that balance.
The Meaning
Knowledge of life
The word Ayurveda comes from two Sanskrit roots. Rather than simply treating symptoms, Ayurveda looks at the whole person and asks why imbalance arose, then gently restores harmony through food, daily rhythm, herbs, bodywork and breath.
Often called the sister science of yoga, Ayurveda rests on a few simple principles:
Pancha Mahabhuta
The five elements
According to Ayurveda, everything in the universe, including you, is made of five great elements. Their unique combination in each person shapes the body, the mind and the way we respond to the world.
Space
AkashaOpenness and expansion. Found in the hollow spaces of the body, like the ears, mouth and lungs.
Air
VayuMovement and lightness. Governs breath, circulation, the nervous system and thought.
Fire
AgniTransformation and heat. Powers digestion, metabolism, vision and intelligence.
Water
JalaFlow and cohesion. Present in blood, lymph, saliva and all the fluids that nourish us.
Earth
PrithviStability and structure. Forms the bones, muscles, skin and tissues that hold us together.
Tridosha
The three doshas
The five elements combine into three life energies called doshas. Everyone has all three, but in a unique proportion, usually with one or two leading. Understanding your doshas is the key to knowing what brings you into balance.
Vata
Space + AirThe energy of movement. Vata governs breathing, circulation, the nervous system and creativity.
Qualities
Light, dry, cool, mobile, quick
In balance
Creative, enthusiastic, lively and adaptable.
Out of balance

Pitta

Qualities
Hot, sharp, intense, oily, focused
In balance
Confident, focused, warm-hearted and a natural leader.
Out of balance
Irritability, impatience, acidity, inflammation, skin rashes.

Kapha
Water + EarthThe energy of structure. Kapha governs strength, immunity, lubrication and emotional steadiness.

Calm, loving, patient, grounded and strong.
Out of balance
Sluggishness, weight gain, congestion, attachment, low motivation.

Your Constitution
Prakriti & Vikruti
Ayurveda looks at two things: who you are by nature, and where you are right now. The space between the two shows exactly what needs care.
Prakriti
Your true natureYour prakriti is the unique balance of doshas you were born with, set at conception. It shapes your body type, temperament, digestion and natural strengths, and it stays the same throughout your life.
Think of it as your personal blueprint: the state in which you feel most like yourself.
Vikruti
Your current stateYour vikruti is your present state of balance. Stress, diet, seasons, travel, age and life events can push one or more doshas out of place, and it changes over time.
When vikruti drifts away from prakriti, we start to feel symptoms long before illness appears.
“The goal of Ayurveda is to bring your vikruti back home to your prakriti, so you return to the balance that is naturally yours.”
